2026 South Dakota Legislative Session – Week Two
The 2026 legislative session is in full stride as we conclude the second week of session today. New bills continue to show up, with more than 200 pieces of legislation already introduced. There is no clear theme so far, however several pieces of legislation look to address property taxes, tax increment financing districts and more.
This week, the Chamber advocated against SB 58, a measure that would have set all property taxes to zero with no plan to find a new funding source for infrastructure, public safety, emergency services, education and other essential services. The bill was defeated in committee on a 7-0 vote.
The Chamber also advocated on a number of other issues, including additional restrictions being imposed on commercial drivers in SB 83, a bill that would mandate all places of business take cash for nearly any transaction in HB 1061 and several others.
The unlimited bill introduction deadline is Jan. 29, so we anticipate seeing a significant number of bills being dropped before the end of next week. Rumors of nearly 800 bill drafts being circulated among legislators make us think we may see a record number of legislation introduced this session.
The Chamber’s public policy team will continue to monitor and evaluate all of the bills introduced to determine whether they have an impact on the greater Sioux Falls business community. Please continue to read Chamber Advocate and check the Bill Tracker to see what issues are on the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce’s radar. If you have questions about any of the bills that have been introduced, please reach out to the Chamber’s public policy team.
