COLLEGIATE LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST

- Eligibility: Junior colleges and senior colleges in the U.S. are eligible to enter the Livestock Judging Contest. The entry form, however, must be signed by the official team coach, confirming that all members of the team are eligible to compete in the contest. Colleges can enter as many teams as they desire. To be considered eligible to compete, contestants must have attended full time at the school from which they are competing.
- Participation: Each Livestock Judging Team will consist of five (5) eligible members and all team scores will count in the team total. Each team member, along with individual participants/alternates, will be eligible for individual overall awards in their division.
- Divisions:
- Junior College – Freshman – Contestants entered in this division must be enrolled in a junior college and cannot compete in this division more than two years.
- Junior College – Sophomore – Contestants entered in this division must be enrolled in a junior college and cannot compete in this division more than two years.
- Senior College – Contestants must be enrolled in a senior college.
- Classes: Each class will consist of four animals. Animals within a class will be designated by numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. The following classes will be judged: a total of three to four sheep/goat classes; a total of four to five classes of cattle; and a total of three to four swine classes (any combination of market and/or breeding hogs). Actual class makeup is subject to change within this list of classes.
- Time: On each class of livestock, contestants will be allowed twelve (12) minutes to make their observations, record their placings, and take notes. All groups will be notified two (2) minutes before the time is up. All contestants shall hand their cards consisting of their number, class of animals and placings, to the group leader immediately when called for. When final time is called, groups will change to other classes as directed by the superintendent.
- Reasons: After placing the classes, the contestants will appear before a judge to give oral reasons defending their placings on certain classes. Each contestant will be allowed two (2) minutes to give reasons on each class. No contestant will be allowed to hold any paper or device of any kind that will assist in stating reasons to the judge. Both divisions will give eight (8) sets of reasons: Four (4) cattle; two (2) swine and two (2) sheep/goat.
- Additional information: Uniforms, college colors or any way of signifying to the judge his/her identity or the identity of the college represented is not allowed. While the contest is in progress, no conferring between contestants or anyone else, except as directed by the superintendent or representatives. Contestants will be disqualified if caught conversing with any other contestant or coach during the contest or oral reasons. No warning will be given. You WILL be disqualified if you are conversing with any other contestant. Any coach or contestant who violates any of the rules of this contest will be barred from competing in future contests and their team will be disqualified for any awards. Use of cell phones or other electronic devices including smartwatches is prohibited.
- Ties/Scoring: Ties will be broken using species reasons scores, overall reasons scores and overall score when breaking ties within species. Ties within reasons will be broken by overall score and ties within overall score will be broken by overall reasons. Scores tied after application of these tie breakers will be broken by a method determined by contest officials. No duplicate awards will be given. Team number and contestant number are assigned at registration. Contestant name, team number, contestant number and placing must be legible on the scorecards, which are provided by the Sioux Empire Livestock Show. Contestants must provide their own writing utensil.
