Message from the Chair
As Sioux Falls joins communities across the country in recognizing America 250, this moment invites more than celebration. It invites reflection, gratitude and responsibility.
The life we enjoy today was made possible by the dreams, hard work and sacrifices of those who came before us. History makes one truth clear: Freedom, opportunity and prosperity have never simply been handed to us. Every generation has benefited from someone else’s courage to build, serve, endure and believe in something greater than themselves.
That is what gives this 250-year milestone such significance. It is a time to honor the past and recognize the opportunity entrusted to us today. We have the privilege of helping shape what the next 250 years of this country will look like — and that responsibility should challenge all of us to begin dreaming again.
For me, honoring our ancestors means more than appreciating their sacrifice. It means stepping fully into this moment and making the most of the “get to” opportunities many before us never had. We get to build businesses, innovate, invest in our community, raise families, create jobs, support causes we believe in and help shape the places we call home.
But if we truly want to honor those sacrifices, we must also ask a harder question: What are we willing to sacrifice so future generations inherit something even better?
That question matters deeply for the business community. A thriving city does not happen by accident. Strong economies are built by people willing to take risks, lead with integrity, create opportunity for others and invest in the long-term health of the community. The prosperity we hope to enjoy tomorrow depends on what we build today — through entrepreneurship, workforce development, civic engagement, mentorship and a commitment to the common good.
At a time when the national narrative often feels defined by negativity, division and cynicism, we still have the freedom to choose differently. We can come together as a community and decide that Sioux Falls will be a place that leads with hope, vision and responsibility.
I remain deeply optimistic because I believe we have the people, values and resources to be that kind of place — a city on a hill, living out the freedom so many before us dreamed of. A city that honors the past with action and lays the groundwork for the next generation, while reminding them that meaningful things are still earned through effort, character and sacrifice.
As we celebrate America 250, may we do so with gratitude for what has been built, humility for what it cost and boldness for what is still possible. The next chapter is not written yet, and we have the opportunity — and responsibility — to help write it well.
