Voting is Your Business

June 2 Primary Election Includes Local, State and Federal Races

Election season is in full swing, as yard signs, billboards, television and social media ads swarm our everyday lives. While the surge of political ads may become background noise to many of us, it is important to use them as daily reminders to do our civic duty and vote in the primary election on June 2.

Voting is critical to ensuring that the elected officials who make decisions that affect our everyday lives and the future of our communities, state and country have the support of the people they represent. During the 2024 primary election, we saw record-low turnout across the state, especially in the Sioux Falls area. In 2026, we hope to see that change with record-setting turnout in the June primary.

Due to recent changes in state law, all local elected offices also will have their elections held during the June primary this year. School board, City Council, County Commission, state Legislature, U.S. House, U.S. Senate and the governor’s race all will appear on your June primary ballot this year. With this many elections on one ballot, this June primary will be pivotal in deciding local elections, as well as narrowing down candidates to represent us at the state and federal level in the general election in November.

These elected officials make decisions about your children’s education, ensuring your community is a place where you can work and raise a family, promoting responsible growth in your community, supporting quality infrastructure and creating policies that allow South Dakota and Sioux Falls to continue to be the best place to live, work and play.
